Why Do a Graphic Design Internship?

A graphic design internship is one of the best ways for students and beginners to move from design theory to real client work. Whether you’re studying design, self-taught through YouTube and online courses, or transitioning from another field, an internship helps you build a professional portfolio, learn industry tools, and understand how design briefs, feedback, and deadlines actually work in a studio or agency environment.

Types of Graphic Design Internships

  • Branding & Identity Design Intern – logos, brand guidelines, stationery design
  • Social Media Design Intern – Instagram/Facebook creatives, reels covers, ad banners
  • UI/UX Design Intern – app and website screens, wireframes (Figma)
  • Print Design Intern – brochures, packaging, posters
  • Illustration Intern – custom illustrations, character design, icon sets

Skills & Tools You Should Know

Most graphic design internships expect basic proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and increasingly, Figma or Canva for quick social media work. A design portfolio — even one with 4–5 personal or college projects — matters far more than formal certifications when applying for internships.

Stipend for Graphic Design Internships

Paid graphic design internships in India typically offer a stipend between ₹5,000–₹15,000/month, depending on the city, company, and internship duration. Some early-stage startups offer unpaid internships in exchange for a certificate and strong portfolio pieces, while established agencies generally pay a fixed monthly stipend.

Internship Duration

Most graphic design internships run for 2 to 6 months, with many companies offering the option to convert high-performing interns into full-time Junior Graphic Designer roles at the end of the internship period.
